HUID in Silver Jewellery: A New Era of Trust, Transparency, and Purity in India
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution announced the successful implementation of mandatory Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) for silver jewellery and artefacts from 1st September 2025. Within just three months, over 17 lakh silver items have been hallmarked under this system — reflecting growing trust among both jewellers and consumers.
The initiative, led by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), aims to strengthen purity assurance, eliminate fake hallmarking, and enhance consumer protection through digital traceability. Each hallmarked silver item now carries a unique 6-digit alphanumeric code (HUID) laser-marked on the jewellery, ensuring full transparency from manufacturing to sale.
The BIS Care mobile app (available on Android and iOS) allows consumers to verify the authenticity of hallmarked items in real-time, displaying purity, item type, jeweller details, and hallmarking centre information.
Southern India leads in silver hallmarking, followed by western and eastern regions. Among product categories, anklets, diyas, and plates dominate hallmarking volumes. BIS continues to run awareness campaigns and consumer engagement drives to promote understanding of the HUID system.
This move builds upon the success of the gold HUID hallmarking system, which has already covered over 56 crore gold items across India. The initiative reinforces India’s long-standing cultural and economic relationship with precious metals by ensuring integrity, transparency, and consumer confidence in jewellery trade.

A Milestone in Consumer Protection and Jewellery Transparency
India’s jewellery industry has reached a new milestone with the introduction of HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) for silver jewellery. Announced by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and implemented by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), this step is designed to bring silver jewellery under the same transparent, technology-driven framework that has already revolutionized gold hallmarking.
Since the HUID system became mandatory on 1st September 2025, the response from the industry has been overwhelmingly positive. Within the first quarter alone, over 17 lakh silver ornaments have been hallmarked, a strong indicator of the growing trust in the system.
What is HUID and How Does It Work?
The HUID is a six-digit alphanumeric code laser-marked on every BIS-hallmarked silver item. Alongside the BIS logo, the word SILVER, and purity grade, this unique code ensures every piece of jewellery can be traced digitally from its origin to the point of sale.
Through the BIS Care App, available in 12 languages, consumers can instantly verify:
-
The purity of their jewellery
-
The type of ornament (e.g., ring, anklet, diya, chain)
-
The name of the jeweller who submitted it for hallmarking
-
The testing and hallmarking centre details
This transparency empowers consumers to make informed decisions and protects them from fraud or fake hallmarking.
Hallmarking Trends and Regional Insights
According to BIS data, the southern region of India leads in silver hallmarking activity, followed by the western and eastern regions. Among product types, anklets and payals hold the largest share — accounting for 27% of total hallmarked silver, primarily in the 800 purity grade. Other popular hallmarked items include silver diyas (7%), plates (7%), idols (4%), and coins (4%).
Strengthening Consumer Confidence
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi highlighted on social media that HUID has strengthened purity assurance and eliminated fake hallmarking practices. By ensuring that each item is digitally traceable, the system has introduced greater accountability and trust between jewellers and consumers.
This initiative complements ongoing efforts to create a fair, transparent, and reliable jewellery market in India — one where purity is guaranteed and consumers can buy with confidence.
Building on the Success of Gold Hallmarking
Gold hallmarking with HUID began in June 2021 and has expanded from 256 to 373 districts across India in just five years. With 1610 BIS-approved hallmarking centres and over 2.08 lakh registered jewellers, more than 56 crore gold items have been hallmarked, setting a strong foundation for the silver HUID rollout.
A Step Toward a Transparent Future
The launch of HUID for silver jewellery marks another decisive move towards digital traceability, purity assurance, and consumer empowerment in India’s precious metal industry. As awareness spreads and technology adoption grows, both jewellers and buyers stand to benefit from a more transparent and trustworthy market.
